Bar modelling in maths progression
Bar modelling is used widely as an effective part of the Concrete, Pictorial, Abstract approach (CPA approach) to maths mastery. By exposing the mathematical structure behind problems, bar modelling is a valuable tool for teacher modelling and pupils’ problem-solving.
In this progression, a combination of photos of concrete resources, pictorial bar models and abstract calculations are brought together to exemplify how to solve problems from across the maths curriculum.
The CPA approach to bar modelling is exemplified from Year 1 to Year 6 for:
- Number and place value
- Addition and subtraction
- Multiplication and division
- Fractions, decimals, and percentages
- Ratio and proportion
- Algebra
